Here's a look at a recent children's picture book commission project that was completed with full-spread artwork, despite a relatively modest budget.

The story features Livi, a young girl who happens to be a Llama, coming to terms with having to wear glasses. Her wise grandma gives her a bit of advice that is the spark that helps Livi feel special.

I worked with the author to design an artwork approach that offers readers an immersive experience, without exceeding her budget. Rather than execute 19 individual illustrations, I proposed 14 spreads. That approach offered me efficiency and the ability to achieve a lavish, colorful look within a tight budget.

One of the initial challenges was character design. I wanted to create anthropomorphic llamas that could project complex emotion, without looking like that other popular picture book series.

Here's a look at the first 12 finished spreads showing Livi's progression from despondency to confidence.
